For most of the past decade, if you wanted your security and observability platform to run AI on top of it, the assumption was straightforward: send it to the cloud. That assumption is precisely what Cisco and NVIDIA just challenged with a new offering designed specifically for enterprises that can't or won't accept that trade-off.

At Splunk .conf in Denver in September 2026, Cisco unveiled the Cisco AI POD for Splunk, a new configuration developed with NVIDIA that delivers self-managed Splunk AI to on premises, private cloud and air gapped environments. It's a direct response to a challenge that's been growing for some time: enterprises desire the operational advantages of AI driven observability and security, yet a significant portion of them cannot place their most sensitive machine data anywhere near a public cloud AI service.

The Real Barrier Wasn't Capability, It Was Confidence

Cisco's own framing of the announcement deserves attention. The company has been clear that the biggest hurdle to enterprise AI adoption today isn't whether the technology functions it's whether organizations have confidence in it enough to implement it, can justify the cost and can protect it. That's a fundamentally different challenge than a technical one and it clarifies why this announcement is architectural rather than simply a feature addition.
NVIDIA's framing addresses the same issue from another perspective: enterprises increasingly must deploy AI to where their data already resides, precisely because security and sovereignty requirements keep their most critical workloads on premises in the first place. For regulated industries and security teams managing sensitive machine data, that's not a choice it's frequently a mandatory requirement and it's exactly the limitation that's prevented AI driven Splunk capabilities from being accessible to many otherwise interested customers until now.

What's Actually in the Box

The Cisco AI POD for Splunk represents a specific implementation within the larger Cisco Secure AI Factory partnership with NVIDIA a flexible, end to end reference design constructed from Cisco AI PODs that integrates Cisco hardware, NVIDIA powered computing, cutting edge AI runtime software and a Kubernetes infrastructure that has been thoroughly tested for Splunk AI applications. This pre validation carries significant weight for the same reasons we've covered elsewhere in this series: pre assembled, validated component combinations substantially lower implementation risk compared to sourcing and integrating components separately.

Organizations implementing this solution can host a combination of open source and proprietary generative AI models on premises for their Splunk Enterprise operations, including Cisco's proprietary Deep Time Series Model alongside alternatives such as Google's Gemma 4 and OpenAI's GPT-OSS 20B, with NVIDIA Nemotron open models anticipated to become available soon. This range of options proves particularly valuable for security teams, who frequently face strict guidelines regarding which models can process specific data categories.

Why This Matters Beyond Splunk Customers

It's tempting to dismiss this as a specialized announcement relevant only to enterprises currently using Splunk. A more constructive interpretation is to view it as an indicator of the direction enterprise AI infrastructure is moving. When a platform provider and an accelerated computing provider collaborate to develop a tested, self hosted AI platform driven by customers' security and data sovereignty concerns this exemplifies the pattern we've highlighted throughout this series: companies that invest in local AI infrastructure today will be prepared to implement these technologies as they mature, rather than being left behind because their systems weren't designed to support them.

This reinforces a concept from our earlier article on Cisco's Wi-Fi 7 security implementation: the most effective enterprise AI and security results emerge when infrastructure and software vendors collaborate intentionally from the start, rather than when organizations assemble disparate components afterward and assume they'll work together seamlessly.

What This Means for Your Infrastructure Planning

If your company has delayed adopting AI powered security or observability solutions due to data residency, sovereignty or air gap constraints, a validated on premises architecture of this type deserves direct evaluation against your actual requirements not against a generic cloud-AI scenario that was never relevant to your situation.

Implementing something like the Cisco AI POD for Splunk still demands the same careful preparation outlined throughout this series: assessing your actual workload, properly sizing the underlying compute and storage resources and connecting it to your current network and security infrastructure rather than operating it as an isolated system.

As a Cisco reseller partner, Beyond Limits Technologies can assist you in determining whether an on premises AI architecture like this aligns with your Splunk environment and your overall infrastructure strategy and ensure it's configured, integrated, and maintained according to your actual security and compliance needs.
