Complete AI Workloads Using Less Power with Micron 9550 SSDs — Part 1 of 2

When you ask a data center manager about what's increasing their energy expenses, the traditional response has been straightforward: GPUs. Rows upon rows of processing accelerators, operating continuously throughout the day, represent an obvious and inescapable power expenditure associated with operating an AI infrastructure business.

What remains less apparent yet increasingly costly is the infrastructure those GPUs require to function properly. Storage occupies a critical position in this ecosystem and it has progressively transformed into one of the most significant expenses in a data center's energy spending. Not because individual drives consume substantial power independently but because AI operations transfer enormous quantities of information, continuously, meaning storage performance efficiency multiplies across tens of thousands of drives into a measurable impact on monthly utility costs.

This represents the challenge Micron addressed through the development of the 9550, a PCIe Gen5 data center storage device engineered around a fundamental objective: is it feasible to accomplish more AI tasks while consuming less energy in the process? The findings demonstrate affirmatively and warrant thorough examination, since the outcomes surpass what most infrastructure groups anticipate from a storage system enhancement.

Speed Comes First, Since Efficiency Without Performance Isn't Worthwhile

Before examining the energy consumption details, it's important to clarify that the Micron 9550 doesn't sacrifice speed to achieve efficiency, it provides superior performance in both areas. The device achieves sequential read performance of approximately 14 GB/s and sequential write performance of approximately 10 GB/s, while random read capability reaches 3.3 million IOPS. These specifications exceed those of equivalent PCIe Gen5 storage devices currently available, sometimes by as much as 67% regarding write performance.

The performance ceiling is critical because AI workloads especially graph neural network (GNN) training and large language model (LLM) inference place unprecedented demands on storage systems in ways traditional enterprise applications never did. These workloads require relentless, high capacity, low latency data transfers between storage and GPU, without the natural breaks that allowed older storage systems to operate more efficiently.

Where the Real Power Advantage Emerges

Micron went beyond just increasing speed. The 9550 combines Micron's proprietary controller ASIC, NAND, DRAM and firmware into a unified, vertically integrated product giving Micron the ability to optimize power consumption at every component level, rather than accepting inefficiencies from external suppliers. This unified design enables the impressive efficiency metrics: Micron claims the 9550 consumes up to 43% less power than competing SSDs when running AI workloads such as GNN and LLM training.

Here's why this matters: power improvements at the individual drive level are valuable. Power improvements that scale across data centers spanning the thousands of drives required for serious AI infrastructure are the kind of gains that appear in both sustainability initiatives and financial projections.

This deserves a thorough examination not just the headline number, but how it performs in actual AI training and inference scenarios and what it means for the complete system's energy consumption, not merely the drive itself.

That's precisely what Part 2 covers.

Next: Breaking Down the Numbers, how the Micron 9550 Reduces AI Energy Consumption Without Sacrificing Performance. We examine the actual test results for GNN training and LLM inference and explain what these power reductions mean for overall system efficiency.
